Terry Thoem (age 70), Vice President, Health, Safety and Environment
Mr. Thoem has served as Frontera’s Vice President, Health, Safety and Environment since January 2000. Mr. Thoem has more than 45 years of professional and managerial experience in the environmental, health and safety field working in 38 countries all over the world. This includes 23 years with Conoco Inc. where he served as Conoco’s corporate environmental manager and upstream international HSE manager; 10 years with the US Environmental Protection Agency, and; 16 years of consulting for international energy companies.
During his career Mr. Thoem also served leading roles in a number of global industry groups and trade organizations, including the International Oil and Gas Producers Association IOGP, (formerly E&P Forum), SPE, API, and the Western Hemisphere EH&S Forum. He has worked closely with non-governmental organizations such as Conservation International, Conservation Fund, WWF, and World Bank. He has degrees in Chemical Engineering (BS Iowa State University) and Environmental Engineering (MS University of Washington).
In 2005, The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) awarded Mr. Thoem the Health, Safety and Environment Person of the year. In 2013, SPE honored Mr. Thoem with the SPE Distinguished Service Award, an award that recognizes SPE members who achieve distinction deemed worthy of special recognition by attaining eminence in the petroleum industry. In 2015, the SPE bestowed Mr. Thoem with their distinguished Gulf Coast Section Service award, given to the individual who represented the Gulf Coast in all support aspects to the industry.
In 1999, Mr. Thoem founded Thoem and Associates, an Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) consultancy firm. He maintains this practice in addition to his duties at Frontera.
